How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?

Hair loss solutions like a hair transplant represent a significant investment in yourself, your appearance, and your confidence. While the cost of hair transplants may vary based on your location and your needs, it’s important to research what makes up the expense. Your thorough research will ensure you’re selecting a reputable, experienced provider who stands by their results.

The hair restoration experts at Balance Hair Restoration have put together information about the costs of hair transplants so you know what you’re getting for your investment.

What Is a Hair Transplant? What Methods Are Available?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure to remove hair from a section of the scalp where hair is abundant and place it in an area where more fullness is desired. Typically, there are two methods of hair transplant: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT). The main difference between these methods is the graft harvest method.

The FUE method harvests individual hair follicles for transplant. It is one of the most advanced hair restoration options available and allows us to create natural-looking and artistic hairline designs. During an FUE procedure, the donor area(s) of the scalp, typically the back and sides of the head, is trimmed very short. A special punch device scores the area and uses suction to extract the graft. Typically, we collect 400 to 700 grafts per hour, with most patients needing two to four hours of harvest. Grafts are then transplanted through small incisions within six hours.

FUE is the most common method of hair transplantation, and it offers these benefits:

  • No incisions mean faster healing
  • Little to no scarring
  • Allows for very short hairstyles
  • Minimal pain and discomfort
  • No long-term activity restrictions
  • Ideal for patients who don’t qualify for FUT due to scalp tightness or lack of donor hair

FUT, or the “strip” method, is a hair transplant technique that removes a strip of hair-bearing skin from the donor area, usually the lower back of the scalp. The strip can stretch along the back of the head for several centimeters, which can leave a significant scar that is typically covered by hair regrowth.

This donor hair strip is divided into grafts of individual follicular units comprised of one to four hairs and prepared for transplant. Each graft is placed through a small incision.

While we don’t perform FUT surgery at Balance Hair Restoration, if Dr. Malhotra determines this method would be most suitable for you, he will refer you to a trusted colleague.

How Much Does a Hair Transplant Typically Cost?

Many factors contribute to the cost of a hair transplant. Hair restoration includes costs such as your location, the surgeon’s experience, the number of grafts, the method used to obtain the grafts, and whether you will require a single-stage or multiple-stage procedure.

Choosing a surgeon and a team of hair transplant technicians with extensive experience in designing artistic hairlines may be more costly; however, the hairline is one of the most essential aspects of creating natural-looking results. As such, selecting a reputable clinic is worth the cost.

Often, the cost of hair restoration is described as a price per graft. Typically, the cost per graft is $5 to $7. However, as the number of grafts increases, the cost per graft decreases. As female hair transplants generally require fewer grafts—1,000 to 1,200—the cost ranges between $6,000 to $8,000. To address male pattern baldness, most male hair transplants require more than 2,000 grafts, which raises the cost range to $8,000 to $15,000.

While costly, hair transplants offer a successful, long-lasting solution to hair loss for both men and women. Hair transplants represent a significant investment in yourself, your self-image, and your confidence. Balance Hair Restoration offers a graft growth pledge to assure you of your return on your investment.

What Factors Can Affect Hair Transplant Cost?

The cost of a hair transplant can vary based on the unique details of your treatment. Some factors that may impact the cost of your hair transplant include:

  • Type of procedure
  • Number of sessions
  • Location of treatment
  • Surgeon’s expertise, skill, and fee
  • Facility fees
  • Medications prescribed
  • Travel, including transportation and lodging

Who Is a Good Candidate for Hair Transplant?

Typically, men and women who are experiencing hair loss or baldness can be good candidates for hair transplants. Ideal candidates have adequate healthy hair growth on the back of the scalp that can be used as a donor area for grafts.

Most hair restoration surgeons recommend waiting for patients to reach age 25 before seeking surgery. Other options are available for patients who are experiencing early hair loss.

Other Options for Hair Restoration

Not everyone qualifies as a candidate for hair transplant surgery. Less invasive non-surgical or medical treatments can increase active hair growth time or modify hormones.

However, Balance Hair Restoration offers other effective hair loss solutions to slow or stop hair loss for those patients, including:

  • Finasteride
  • Rogaine
  • Himms Protocol
  • Nutrafol
  • Laser Cap
  • Nizoral
