What is recovery like after hair restoration? Most patients are delighted by how quickly they heal and return to their daily activities. Many feel up to dinner at a favorite restaurant within 24 hours and resume basic activities the very next day. Your hair restoration is uniquely designed to target your patterns of hair loss. Your unique situation will impact how quickly you heal. The number of hair grafts needed, your body’s typical healing rate, and your health and medical conditions may impact your healing. Back to Work in About 72 hours

Downtime is minimal after FUE hair restoration. Most of our patients only miss a few days of work. They can wear a ball cap if it does not rub the grafts after 2-3 days.

Minimal Pain or Discomfort

Pain and discomfort are minimal after FUE. Dr. Malhotra and his team will teach you how to use medications (including over-the-counter medications) to manage discomfort so you can comfortably heal. Most patients just take tylenol or tylenol with codeine.

Few Activity Restrictions

You can resume most daily activities shortly after your hair restoration surgery. We’ll provide detailed instructions about any activity restrictions which may include not washing your hair for 2-3 days and avoiding strenuous exercise and sexual activity for 7-10 days after surgery.

No Large Incisions

With FUE hair restoration, there are no large incisions to care for after surgery. Your donor area is typically disguised by your remaining hair within 7-10 days.

Minimal Side Effects

Common side effects after hair restoration include itching, scalp tightness, and throbbing sensations. These side effects are typically minimal and can be controlled with pain medications. Mild swelling or soreness may also occur but typically resolves within 2-7 days after surgery.

Recovery Is Easier with FUE

FAQ: Recovery After Hair Restoration

Will I need to miss work after hair restoration surgery?

Most patients only miss a few days of work after a hair transplant with Dr. Malhotra. Plan on taking a week off from work, but you may feel ready to return after just a few days.

When will I start to see hair growth after hair transplant surgery?

A few weeks after your hair transplant, your newly transferred hairs will fall out. Don’t be alarmed. This is a normal part of the recovery process. Patients start to regrowth from these hairs after one to two months. Within six to nine months of surgery, most patients notice a dramatic change in their hairline that will continue to improve as hair continues to grow.

What medications will I need to take during recovery from hair restoration?

Dr. Malhotra may prescribe a few different medications to aid in your recovery after hair restoration. Commonly prescribed medications include anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and pain medications. We determine prescription needs individually, so your prescriptions may vary.

How long will my hair restoration results last? Are they permanent?

Hair restoration results are long-lasting. Dr. Malhotra selects donor hair from the back of the scalp. This hair is more likely to be resistant to hair loss.
